Wedge Island

Wedge island is the highest light in South Australia

Wedge Island was first settled in the mid-1800's with a horse breeding farm for the Indian Army.

The first light on Wedge Island was lit on 29 March 1911. It was described as "an unwatched bright light from an iron pile structure 20ft high surrounded by a close fence painted white on the south-eastern end of Wedge Island. The light will flash every 3 seconds. Its focal plane will be 680ft above ordinary sea level and will be visible in clear weather for a distance of about 12 miles all around the horizon."

In the early 1970's a concrete tower was poured onsite and a NAL1 type fibreglass lantern room, bolted on top. The revolving pedestal used was unique to South Australia, being a PRDA-51 used for Dalen incandescent mantle lights only. The whole system operated solely on acetylene gas.
